In my current body of work, I draw things that inhabit the wide spaces around and above us. While working, I think about natural history vs. “local” history, and what it means to look up at the sky. In a suburban environment where the landscape is tightly controlled we see only what we’re supposed to or expect to see when we confine our gaze to the space just around our bodies. If we look up at the sky in this landscape, we sometimes see unexpected things or random juxtapositions, such as a satellite dish peeking above an old storefront, or electrical wires wrapped around a tree limb. These juxtapositions give me a sense of wry absurdity and inspire me to be outside and to see beyond what I’m trained to see. I hope my work does the same for the viewer.
